What is Black Cohosh?
Black Cohosh is a wildflower and preparations are derived from the dark root of a plant (Cimicifuga Racemosa) also known as black snakeroot, indigenous to North America. Black cohosh contains several ingredients, including triterpene glycosides (for example, acetin and 27-deoxyactein) and isoflavones, such as those found in soy products. Other constituents include aromatic acids, tannins, resins, fatty acids, starches, and sugars.
What does Black Cohosh do?
Phyto-oestrogens may help to maintain a healthy endocrine (hormone) system. As a woman approaches menopause, the signals between the ovaries and pituitary gland diminish, slowing down estrogen production and increasing luteinizing hormone (LH) secretions. Hot flushes can result from these hormonal changes. Black Cohosh may help to maintain normal hormone levels for women during menstruation and during the menopause.
